    Log cabin in the woods

A lovely log cabin in the woods near beddgelert, went in December. It's like an MBA style open door. Virtually impossible to locate. Usually I go in winter to bag mountains and do long walks, but this time we just faffed, cut wood and fixed things. Air like champagne and drinking water out of...

    Rocket cookstoves and solar cooking

Anybody who's interested in rocket stoves and solar cooking can have a read about these things, demo ed for five sunny days at the Green Gathering this year, in Chepstow, Wales. I've been trying solar cookers for years here in Britain and had some real success. Still surprised that most have not...

    DIY Solar Oven

Yes, the glass tube is a dewar/thermos tube. So it cant be DIY. If you want some really high temps with something you make yourself, you want to try a parabolic dish solar cooker. You could look for a thrown away TV dish, then stick some shiny stuff to it. Get the focus right and your away...

    DIY Solar Oven

It's difficult to get those temperatures with a box oven, maybe in summer in California. In UK no chance. I've got a vacuum tube solar cooker that can get that hot and beyond that in direct sun, in the UK. This is what I mean www.slicksolarstove.com , today, sunny, January, I made a big long...

    small group cooking

Ive been using an ecozoom versa (see link above) last summer and through winter. Its a great tool and loads of power. I can see it will last and last not like those crappy flat pack bbqs. Had a few and they just go rusty and die after a season. The ecozoom is a bit pricey so if just google...

    rocket stove for outside cooking

Whoo hooo Birthday yesterday and I am now the happy owner of a EcoZoom Versa cookstove. I had emailed this review http://www.****preparedness.com/ecozoom-versa-stove-review/#.Ulv9cVMmVSo to my missus since I knew the US paranoid survivalist bit would make her laugh,.........but it contained a...

    rocket stove for outside cooking

Hi Mountain Goat I did try making one last year, with hilarious, asphyxiating consequences. Now it gets used to lock bikes to. There a great site at donkey32.proboards.com for ( 'the more competent' ) experimenters. Im looking at this Ecozoom one on amazon uk, reviews look good, size good...

    rocket stove for outside cooking

That does appear to be good value.....like a cheaper version of the frontier burner and less steampunk than the dk! I cant tell if it can be folded away? Ive thought about this kind of thing. Problem id have is that mrs kombi wouldnt take kindly to me erecting such a butch shrine in her...

    rocket stove for outside cooking

Birthday coming. Does any body know about rockets stoves I can buy. I love cooking outside in the garden - use the kelly kettle all the time. Theres not much choice and it boils down to a DK which is a bit raw, or rocket cookstoves for sale abroad only, like the Ecozoom types or Stovetec...

The temp gauge is saying 90 dgs, at 12 dgs ambient. Not sure it will get higher now but its still clear. I expect it will be hotter in side the vessels due to increased pressure. Good job were out of the north wind which feels a bit cold. Stew

    Solar Cooking in the UK?

Hi Dave When out and about the sun can be used as a food water pre-heat for saving cooking fuel, or keeping fires to a minimum. Aluminium foil & oven bags are light weight, a black water bottle/pots is no additional weight to any other. When camping in the ardeche last year a friends...

    camping on snowdon

Just dont forgot how wet and cold it can make you the higher you try to camp. I've had a tent blow down on Snowdon yr wydffa due to the buffeting, in rain this is no good. Just because its popular doesnt mean the weather stops being hard core, life threatening, I'm sure you wont need telling...

Heads up, Monty Halls Great Hebridean Escape

I was up in Applecross for a locals wedding weekend before last. This is the scottish village about 3 miles south of Montys 'bothy'. We went to the location, a beautiful wild beach - except for the MOD manned listening station about 400 yards from the bothy - which strangely never appeared on...

    Solar Cooking in the UK?

Came across the thread and thought I'd contribute. I've been solar cooking in London for about 5 years, slowly getting better and better results. The maximum sustained temperature I had was 130 dgs c for about 2 hours (box oven with about a kilo of grub - july). All home made stuff and...
