    alcohol hand cleanser

I always keep a small sqeeze bottle of liquid hand sanitizer in my bag. The bottles can become brittle after awhile, so I wrap a few lengths of good duct tape around it. Duct tape of course can serve multiple functions, and in this case it also protects the integrity of the bottle. This...

    Leather Sheath question

I haven't been here for quite some time, forgot how much I enjoyed the site. In any case, I would try as you suggest prior to making a new sheath. A few suggestions. Fill the sink with hot water, but not so hot you can't hold your hand in it. Put in just a couple of drops of common dishwashing...

    Blankets vs sleeping bags

I have used both quite bit. The US issue bags are very durable and warm, but large and bulky. Of course when you are freezing and without, bulky becomes a non issue. Commericial bags are something we are all relatively in tune with. As for blankets, when I used to do French and Indan War...

    Dispatching injured roadkill?

Understood. It really is a shame what has happened accross the waters regarding firearms in general. Great Britain has such a fine and rich history of innovation as well as top quality rifles and shotguns. A first class British custom is simply in a class of it's own. To be frank, there isn't an...

    Dispatching injured roadkill?

Valid points I am sure for the majority of the folks here. I probably should have made it clear that I live elsewhere. Now if some Bobby wants to ride his bicycle over here, tweet his whistle at me, and say "what's all this then" while I shoot an injured deer, that would be fine. Please...

Types of tinder in NE USA.

No tinder fungus proper here in the Ozarks. I have charred shelf fungus which will take and hold a spark OK. As for unprepared materials around here, cattail fluff, thistle down, and similar stuff when in season. In the deeper woods you won't find it. I then scrape or shred cedar bark from down...

    Dispatching injured roadkill?

Something as large as a deer, dog, coyote etc. would get shot assuming I was not in town. Smaller stuff gets a tire jack to the noggin. Buzzards have to eat too. I did kill a suspected rabid groundhog with a shovel once but I hit it too hard and snapped the shovel handle in half. It's hard to...

    fies steel problem

I would not worry about it at all unless the amount of rust was to the point of impairing the function. It will spark just fine. Coating the steel with oil or some such will keep rust at bay but oily steel does not spark very well untill you scrape through the coating.

    Primus 96 Char cloth.

That is really a neat old stove. A classic. I have made quite a bit of char cloth and if I may I will offer a pointer or two. It dosen't have to be pure cotton, linen also works but does not catch a spark as readily. A nap on the cloth helps. I use baby flannel from the cloth store. I always...

Getting the pith out of elder.

Coat hanger wire is what I have used on Sassafrass. It also has a pithy center on the younger shoots. Another choice is brazing rod. It is a bronze type alloy and is a bit stiffer than the coat hanger stuff. In either case you can heat it up over the stove and get after it or you can peen the...

    Hello from the States

Just a quick hello. I found this site while browsing around and am enjoying it quite a bit. I live in an area of the USA refered to as the Ozark Mountains which is really an immense plateau which has eroded into it's present state. Lots of caves, lots of rivers, creeks (we call them criks) and...
