I believe the best dyes for home use on cotton are cold water fibre reactive dyes. They have superior UV resistance to the dyes that you do in your washing machine. Dylon used to make this sort of dye, but seem to have stopped when they updated their range. There are other makes available...

If you get fibre reactive dyes (which bond with the fabric) they would be far superior to paint. They wouldn't wear off or affect the feel of the fabric. You can get thickeners to mix with the dye which allow you to paint the dye on in your desired pattern. Hopefully the best of both worlds...

Willow buds have a single scale covering the whole bud - compare this with other trees/shrubs. AFAIK all willows have this, I don't think any other species does.
