    Dyeing Canvas

I believe the best dyes for home use on cotton are cold water fibre reactive dyes. They have superior UV resistance to the dyes that you do in your washing machine. Dylon used to make this sort of dye, but seem to have stopped when they updated their range. There are other makes available...

    Printing camo patterns onto fabric?

If you get fibre reactive dyes (which bond with the fabric) they would be far superior to paint. They wouldn't wear off or affect the feel of the fabric. You can get thickeners to mix with the dye which allow you to paint the dye on in your desired pattern. Hopefully the best of both worlds...

Building a stone cabin type shelter

All the old croft houses in my neck of the wood were built with a clay "mortar". It's not really mortar, more like dry stone building with clay in between the stones. It keeps the wind out, breathes and doesn't wash out. I've dismantled several old ruins to get stone for dyking. Many houses...

    Birch or alder?

Alder buds are always on stalks, at least A. glutinosa the British native. This shows in the alder photos posted. There are several other non-native species of alder that you might come across; grey alder, Italian alder, red alder, green alder and sitka alder. I'm not familiar with these...

    SOF postage, Ripoff or Justified?

£6.50 is at the high end for postage, but it's not unique. You should think yourself lucky you don't live up here, orders over £30 postage to NI and HIghlands £13.50  Needless to say I have never spent over £30 with them and I'm not going to unless I'm in their shop. They do have a very...

    Identifying Willow in Winter

Willow buds have a single scale covering the whole bud - compare this with other trees/shrubs. AFAIK all willows have this, I don't think any other species does.

    Repairing/sewing ventile

Polycotton thread available here - http://www.empressmills.co.uk/acatalog/Polycore.html I've got some 25s and 12s it has a good feel to it. 36s should be fine for normal use and you get a good choice of colours. Gutermann extra strong is polyester 40s, and Gutermann topstitch is 30s.
