Update to an old thread - Howies is not made in New Zealand - was taken over by Timberland/Smartwool and recently by another company. Hasn't been NZ made for a long time.
Whosever you buy, if you buy cheap your not getting the real stuff. End of story. Real superfine merino is not cheap as...
As an update to this thread - ChocFish have got a heavier weight buff - they call it a Tuara - that definitely fits the bill. I found them through this guy
Best merino T's I think are from chocolate fish. Long in body, good smooth fabric - better than others I've found and good for both summer and winter wear.
Swanni now make their gear in China and there's a cartload of quality problems as a result. I'd give the WeLoveWool guys a try. If their stuff is genuinely made in NZ it should be much better quality. Yes, the wool will be "itchy" - why would you want superfine stuff? You wont be wearing this...
Interesting results. If animals are colourblind, why do hunters feel they need to blend in at all (camouflage colours etc.)? In difficult terrain it's best for obvious safety reasons to wear bright colours. In the event of an accident or difficulties, makes it easy to spot. Heard of one woman...
Bamboo is biggest con going. Far worse than cotton for any serious outdoor activity 'cos it soaks up wet like sponge and then takes a long long time to dry - so potentially dangerous if weather turns bad. Use some commonsense - how can any fabric recommended for babies diapers, bathrobes...
Icebreaker should be cheap - its made in China and the material is poor. I chucked the stuff I bought last year after it itched and pilled to blazes. Might have bin good when still made in NZ but not now. Watch out for Trekmates merino as well - it says its "ultrafine" when its not even...
Why pay £40????? Howies stuff is Smartwool and after seeing a pair a mate of mine bought, would say the material and design is no where near as good as Chocfish - which are also a hell of a lot cheaper - under 30 quid.
