Went for a short walk last weekend, the weather was great. spotted quite a few mushrooms and a fallow deer.

Maybe not quite as exciting as moose hunting ;) But really rewarding when you spot a tasty one, also the more dangerous species are very interesting to see!

Well, moose hunting gives a big pay-off on a few occations - picking mushrooms gives lower pay-off on much, much more occations...so I think it's a very tight race, in all.

I'll sign up for the first available class...funny how a couple of nice pics work :)

The thing that I find most fascinating about fungi is that on a basic level they are hunter gatherers like us. They hunt for plant protiens but more notably the oyster mushroom hunts small worms in the soil called nematodes, it uses a lasso type snare to catch and digest the worms, I find this fascinating. Also when trees develop their cellulose partly converts to lignin, this hard substance is what gives trees their strength but is undigestable to all animals except certain fungi, how cool is that!
