Sat down for a break whilst having a bimble around the reservoir and ended up sharing lunch with a squirrel.
No hide, no camo clothing just sat quietly chewing a sandwich in the scrub off the path and the little fella appeared on the branch ten feet away.

Sit or stand with your arms quietly at your sides (eating lunch).
To most forest animals, you look like the front end of a deer/moose/elk/etc.
Raising your arms is lifting your front legs and that's a threat.

That's how you got away with your encounter.

Many bow hunters here stalk out in the open. They hold their bow on top of their head = antlers.
Laugh all you want, it works.

I wish I had a camera with me the other day when I watched a squirrel fall out of a tree and then manage to catch himself on a branch of the tree next to it...
