That style of bag is extremely easy to make with a sewing machine.

I taught Man of Tanith how to use his grandmothers sewing machine and he knocked up a very nice example in an hour or so.

Sadly there's no working pics on the thread about the lesson but he ought to be able to take one or two of the bag if he can find it  :D

As for suppliers of waxed cotton there's loads on ebay

Oil cloth seems one of those things that gets lost in translation from the US to UK. And now that the term is used for PVC coated cotton, makes finding a source all the more harder.

I know Dave gets some of his oilskin stuff from http://tentsmiths.com but can't see the haversack listed there.

You've lost me? I'm not after PVC coated cotton

I believe the pathfinder haversacks were originally on the canteenshop.com website

Oilcloth or oilskin was, if I remember rightly, cloth treated with linseed oil. A similar, but much thicker material is the old fashioned floor covering linoleum, or lino.

I remember wearing an oilskin coat and sou'wester as a child, taking fishing boat rides out from Scarborough.

Wikipedia has a couple of articles about both oilskin and linoleum, that would be a good starting point for research.

i have one of peto's bags, its ok, it is actually thick tarpaulin type material, it is coated in wax.
he does various types, check his website out, they are ok, very basic, but well made, at least the one I have is, its slightly smaller than I expected, and on his site he seems to get a lot packed in it, but as a daysack its spot on.

I have a proper waxed cotton messenger bag and rucksack, I use the rucksack every week as I work away, I love it, but I only get my work gear and wash bag in it, its from a company called 'TRAKKE' up in Glasgow, a little expensive but I will say very high end workmanship and material, I had it as a pressie from SWMBO for my half century. I can vouch for the waterproofness if that's a word! very comfortable and quiet.

I'm not affiliated or work, know, befriend, been paid or any other association with either peto or trakke, just passing on my opinion of their products.

Reinforced UPVC bags are quite popular for caving/potholing/canyoneering/kayaking trips/workbags/hauling sacks/rope bags.

There's basic rucksack types fancy holdalls paperboy bags and dry bags, available in different sizes. Very practical and hardwearing. Only trouble is they tend to come in garish yellows and reds, rather than bushy greens.

Examples here:

The basic single compartment rucksack type with adjustable shoulder straps, with or without nylon extension sleeve, top draw cord closure and adjustable fastening top cover, is a great piece of kit well suited to outdoor use, I've used this type of sack working outdoors for years. 35lt and 45lt sizes half filled make for a great day bag, not the best for a fully ladened forced 30k march, but great for bumbling around in the woods.

Lyon Equipment (Located in Cumbria, Tebay & Dent, no affiliation) will do bespoke bags and offer their non bespoke range in a variety of colours, including green.

Thanks I have a bag by Peto and I'm very happy with it, not sure he works with oilcloth though
