I'm trying to order a brake calliper for my van, I'm looking for a rear offside calliper but all the sellers are now describing them as left or right! I'm guessing offside is right (UK) but asking here to make sure...

It doesn't matter what country you're in (well, it shouldn't anyway) The terminology goes back to cavalry days when you always mounted from the left (near) side.

Looks like it has two meanings, one of which would change depending on which side of the reoad you drive on.

- The side of a vehicle nearest the kerb (in Britain, the left)

- The left side of a horse.

Yeah, I thought of that too. Either way they're both the same in the UK though. To be honest I've never heard anybody here (where we drive on the right) use the term in connection with motor vehicles or craft. It's usually either left/right or driver side/passenger side or port/starboard (for aircraft and/or boats) I could be missing somebody using it here I suppose.

Long ago, I used to write science & technology pieces for print and for radio (204 scripts).
Anyway, there's a protocol for descriptions in one of my writing guide books. I'll find it.
It's the issue of writing from the coarse to the fine detail, in that order. Some examples seemed obtuse but I followed the style.
'On-side' and 'off-side' should be rejected as arbitrary.
Something like: "driver's side, rear," is indisputable.

Well, is it on the right or left side, if you are sitting in vehicle facing forward?

You write 'rear offside' .

Or use stearbord ( starboard these days) and babord, another good way to confuse landcrabs!
