You might take that attitude but this forum is not a place to promote and encourage illegal practises.

By all means talk about yo-yo reels but there is no application in ths country where they can be used unless attached to a rod and not left unattended.

"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"

"If a man is talking in the forest, and no woman is there to hear him, is he still wrong?"

Like the poisonous phytohemeagglutinins in raw beans. Cook your legumes.
Jicama? There's DDT in Penguins and they have not sprayed a crop down there in centuries.

Late summer of 1965 (September?) we used 44,000 lbs Rotenone powder
to rehab a small lake by killing the coarse fish above the thermocline.
Colateral damage to several dozen rainbows. Ooooops!

Like others have asked, what species are you after?
-Catfish? Fish at night (preferably at moonrise on a full moon) and use a stinky bait or chicken liver (old shrimp works well too)
-Bass? It'll vary a little with both the species of bass and your location as well as the season but generally live bait such as shiners or sunfish work well. I catch more bass on a topwater lure such as a Devil Horse (you have to figure what color they're biting on a given day/location) or the now discontinued Creek Chubber than any other artificial lure

I can't fing an image of my Creek Chubber

-Sunfish? I use crickets, worms, hot dogs, bacon, and pretty much everything else'

Of course if you wanna take up fly fishing that's a whole different past time!

Rotenone kills most aquatic animals, which might be a harsh way to get a meal!
It is toxic to humans too, but the levels in the fish are to low to harm us.

Common mullein renders fish unconscious according to one of my survival books. Doesn't seem practical; it would take a lot of crushed mullein leaves to dose a pond sufficiently large to contain fish worth catching.

Pack rods here are 3 or 4 or 5 piece assemblies. Expensive but might be worth building.
I have yet to meet a single person who actually owns and uses one.
2 piece 60" spin cast rod. Little open face reel with 6# line = you're done.

If you weren't going to get hung up in the forest, I don't find a 2 pc flyrod 108"/9' a nuisance to carry.
Many of our alpine lakes are stocked so fishing tackle can put a lot of food in the pan.

Shimano make a series of really good travel rods. The 7' spinner and a 11' rod, which is better for float, are just genuinely ace. They break down to about 18" and are delivered to you in a little tube-shaped carry case which is just oversized enough for a bare bones bunch of tackle .. hooks, floats, pliers etc ... but not your reel.

They started to do a beach rod a while ago and used to do a fly which had great reviews but they stopped making it pretty sharpish. Must have been around 2002 - I remember cause I wanted to pick one up for a little Adriatic trip that year but ended up just taking the spinner. And, I remember it more because it was the start of the ban on tools on flights. I just stood there open-mouthed when the guy searching stuff said the pliers couldn't come. He relented in the end because he fished himself. :) Things just got worse after that I suppose.

I and my dear son own and use sometimes Shimano STC travel rods. Spinning and boat.
I have had mine for ages, his is about 10 years old.

He also owns a fly fishing travel rod, an Orvis, that looks really nice.
( I do not fly fish myself)

I have tried the Tenkara rods, did not like it.

The Shimano travel rods are fantastic quality.
But, by design weaker for abuse.

When we fish for the large Skrei cod and Halibut, we use one piece rods.
With the fishing technique we use we can get some serious weight of fish on the rods.

Build a few serious rods from parts. You can expect the finished rod to have an equivalent value of 3X to cost of the parts.
Even a fat boat rod with roller guides. Come to think of it, I've lost mine.

Fuji agate tips don't slot from dirty water.
Rodon reel seats are as good as it gets. Don't blink at the prices.
The entire process isn't complicated and not really tedious as well.

I would gladly, but have problems getting the parts to repair my existing ones!

I had to use nail varnish (. Women use to hide dirty fingernails :). ). to use to laquer the thread.

My son is a pro on the art of stepping on the line guides.

Use your home-grown spy in Toronto to find the parts. Who's to say the originals were very good?
Anybody that sells blanks will have everything else. Gudebrod still a brand?
I kind of doubt that a ship's chandler is the place to start but could be worth a look.
Tackle parts (everything other than hooks) should be loose goods somewhere.

In less than 3 minutes looking, Gudebrod and Rodon are good enough search terms. There's rod building stuff all over the internet. Must be the same for tackle and lure parts.

So (forgive my ignorance) does that mean it's OK to use one whilst it can be attended? i.e. hang one from a tree whilst fishing a few feet down the bank? (I have seen one of these used successfully BTW - not in the UK).

The Salmon & Fisheries Act says that an unattended set line is not legal, further info here https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1975/51

(3)In this section—

  • “crossline” means a fishing line reaching from bank to bank across water and having attached to it one or more lures or baited hooks;

  • “otter lath or jack” includes any small boat or vessel, board, stick or other instrument, whether used with a hand line, or as auxiliary to a rod and line, or otherwise for the purpose of running out lures, artificial or otherwise;

  • “setline” means a fishing line left unattended in water and having attached to it one or more lures or baited hooks;

  • “stroke-haul or snatch” includes any instrument or device, whether used with a rod and line or otherwise, for the purpose of foul hooking any fish.
That being the case, would fishing with 2 or 3 rods set (say) 5 feet apart not come under the same section ?
Can multiple rods all be 'attended' ?

EDIT to change 6 feet apart to 5 feet apart.

Many people fish multiple rods. It is common practice for coarse fishing, so no, that alone does not count as unattended because the person attending them is sat either next to them, or at a short distance, and is paying attention. Such rods will have some system for indicating a bite, be it a float, swing tip, quiver tip, ring of foil on a stick or a fancy electronic buzzer. All of which require a person to monitor them and be ready to take action quickly. The fisherman is not wandering up and down the bank fishing one rod while leaving another fitted with an automatic strike/reel-in system.
