With the van in for a service I had a few hours to spare. Google maps told me there was a place nearby that looked interesting. Wiki said there was an abundance of rare flora and a healthy population of deer...

I practiced some skills. Firefighting with birch bark and pine feather sticks.

By the time I lit the birch it was dark. The feather sticks weren't as successful....

Long story short, the back of my knife was getting rounded and it wasn't throwing good enough sparks. Maybe I needed finer feathers. But hey, I'll remember next time.

I got a brew on. Pine needle tea. I collected this year's shoots and added them to the pot. I like a pine needle tea.

Throughout the day I had collected a fresh penny bun and to my surprise, a nice big handful of cauliflower fungus! I decided that they would become my dinner.

Califlower fungi.

I sat and enjoyed my brew, packed it all away and headed back to the garage to collect my van.

Oh yeah, I made a mushroom fondue!

Oh, as it's my first post and if you're interested, here's what I always carry in my pockets when I'm out....

The spark lights the birch, the birch lights the feather sticks, the feather sticks light the fuel - looks like you got it right to me :)
My feather sticks would never be fine enough to light with a spark!
Interesting camo pattern; what is it?

It's mountain pattern. The shelter is called a Fjelduken. It's from Norway.
