Are you suggesting this from your own actual experience?

What temperature is the fire achieving? How long do you need to keep it in there? How much protection does a thin layer of aluminium foil give to protect wood in a wood fire?

Its not what I would be advising you to do, that's for sure....


The thin foil just gives the handle added protection the head will only be submerged on the blade so the wooden parts shouldn't be exposed to heat. Anyways the temps your looking for in the ashes are around 200 to 300 it isn't an exact science but it saves you cutting the haft off to fit the head in an oven it will also make the edge soft enough not to shatter any more.

If you want to re-use the axe just sharpen the chip out and call it done. Have a rougher/splitting edge.

I did that with a wetterlings axe years ago and not had a bother from it since
